IGP Ochola Bans FDC Rallies In Ankole Region
The Inspector General of Police, Martins Okoth-Ochola, has announced a ban on all rallies organised by the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Ankole sub-region until further notice.
According to Rwizi Region police spokesperson Samson Kasasira, the ban was prompted by the increasing cases where the rallies degenerate into violence.
"FDC will not have any more rallies here within the region, Rwizi and others parts, according to the guidelines from police headquarters. We are not going to allow them hold any more rallies in Rwizi region until further guidance from the office of the IGP," Mr Kasasira said at a press conference in Mbarara Town on Tuesday.
"Their rallies were banned on grounds that they have persistently remained violent on their rallies across the country. You can have an example of what happened in Rukungiri Kigezi region yesterday, there was a lot of teargas, and Chaos in town and that is not what we want in Rwizi region," Mr Kasasira said.
In Rukungiri on Monday, 40 FDC supporters, including secretary for mobilization Ingrid Turinawe, were arrested and on Tuesday charged with inciting violence following their attempt to hold thanksgiving prayers at Rukungiri stadium.
And on Tuesday, there was heavy police deployment in Mbarara town on Tuesday to ostensibly stop FDC leaders from holding a rally as they had planned to welcome the party president, Eng. Patrick Amuriat Oboi, at Booma grounds.
"The deployment is just a preventive measure because we saw what happened in Rukungiri yesterday. We duly informed the leadership of FDC that they could not hold these rallies here and Mbarara directly from police headquarters but because they are being defiant that why we had to make sure that nothing happens and we have deployed at all round abouts that lead to Mbarara town to foil their defiance," Mr Kasasira said.
