{UAH} REMEMBERING COMRADE MAX LEVITAS

Comrade Max Levitas, at 103, the oldest and longest serving member of the Communist Party of Great Britain sadly passed away yesterday.  Max spent his entire life in the Communist Party. He leaves behind a rich and veritable example of steadfastness, dedication and devotion. For rare do we find individuals who have dedicated their entire lives to a political cause- in his case to the cause of the oppressed and the working classes of the world.

What  did Comrade Max Levitas dedicate his entire life to:.

"In short, the Communists everywhere support every revolutionary movement against the existing social and political order of things.

In all these movements, they bring to the front, as the leading question in each, the property question, no matter what its degree of development at the time.

Finally, they labour everywhere for the union and agreement of the democratic parties of all countries.

The Communists disdain to conceal their views and aims. They openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win-         Karl Marx- Manifesto of The Communist Party

GREAT SADNESS, GREATER RESOLVE - Communist Party general secretary Robert Griffiths tonight expressed great sadness, "at the passing away of our dear comrade Max Levitas at 103 years old, the oldest and longest serving member of the Communist Party, a Jewish tailor who joined the Young Communist League at age of twelve! Max served the people throughout his life, as a veteran defender of the East End of London against Mosley's fascist black shirts and as a CP local councillor. Max's brother Maurie fought with the Irish Connolly Battalion in Spain. Max was a football fan, keen supporter of Tottenham Hotspur, a community and family man and a legendary figure in the East End where he lived most of his life after his family came from Dublin to escape poverty, first to Glasgow, before settling in Whitechapel. Max will be sorely missed, but he touched the lives of so many people and will inspire many more to struggle for the thing that gave meaning to Max's life - the vision that workers could end capitalism and thrive in a new society of fellowship and socialism. Many will remember his amazing speech in Altab Ali Park during the 2016 demonstration to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. Then, Max expressed his pride in his membership of the CP, called for unity between labour and communist activists and for the CP to fight to have its representatives elected to councils and parliament, to give support to a new Labour government. "We can not afford another Tory government" he roared.
The Communist Party mourns his passing, salutes this wonderful man and comrade and resolves to carry on his life's work." Photo by Charlotte Barnes.
