{UAH} TODAY IN HISTORY
On this day, 54 years ago, Apollo Milton Obote 37, the Prime Minister of Uganda married Miss Maria Kalule in a grand wedding attended by 20,000 guests.
The bride, Miss Kalule was a former secretary at Uganda's United Nations mission in New York.
The two were married by the Archbishop of Uganda Dr. Leslie Brown at Namirembe Cathedral.
During the ceremony the Archbishop told Miss Kalule:
"You are not marrying the Prime Minister. You are marrying the man you love. But because he is also Prime Minister the marriage is of prime importance to the national life of Uganda."
As the bridal couple left the church several spectators several hundred spectators mobbed them as they headed for the reception at Lugogo sports stadium, the scene of celebrations in October 1962 when Uganda gained its independence.
Jomo Kenyatta and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga were among the guests from Kenya.
Later on in the night the newly-weds left Entebbe for London and a European honeymoon.
