17 dead in Kenya after tanker hits minibus

At least 17 people have been killed in western Kenya after a petrol tanker collided with a stationary minibus, according to the St John Ambulance service.

The minibus - known locally as a matatu - had stopped at the side of the road near the town of Webuye to pick up passengers when the truck slammed into it.

Two children and a pedestrian at the scene were among those killed, St John Ambulance spokesman Fredrick Makhasa told dpa.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

Road accidents are common in Kenya, where factors include un-roadworthy vehicles, poor road conditions, and in some areas, unskilled drivers.

Fifty-eight people were killed in October when a bus rolled down a steep hill and overturned in Kericho County, about 200 kilometres north of the capital, Nairobi.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority, 2945 people have been killed on Kenya's roads this year up to December 12.
