{UAH} THE BARABBAS REFERENDUM
'BOBI IS NOT THE ONE WE WANT
BUT BOBI IS THE ONE WE HAVE'
By Tony Geoffrey Owana
Nearly all right-thinking Ugandans who openly profess support for Bobi
Wine as Uganda's next president also privately beseech the deities for
a miracle to transform Wine into the leader their country deserves.
Each of them says this prayer in strict privacy because any open
expression of doubt in the hugely popular young man could have dire
consequences for the Doubting Thomas. At the very least he or she
could be condemned as Museveni's mole in Opposition clothing and 'many
things' can happen to such a careless person.
A few brazenly tell you that even though Wine is not the best for
leadership in the opposition ranks he is the only one available at the
moment. Others add that the greatest insult anyone can hurl at
President Museveni and NRM is to make him contest with and lose to
this…… I will not print the unappetizing terms in which they describe
their proposed flag-bearer. The point however is that although Wine
(or Hon Kyagulanyi) is not the best the opposition has to take over
Uganda from Museveni, they are stuck with him at their helm in this
32-year old project. Many are actually gnashing their teeth in
impotent rage!!!!
Shortly after he won the race for parliament, I predicted in a
newspaper article that if Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu risked
sticking to everything that made Bobi Wine famous, the honorable MP
would lose to the ghetto-man.
I said the same fate would befall Wine if the dapper ways of an MP
prevailed over the ghetto musician, stressing that under no
circumstances would he enjoy both. I was nearly 100% right…nearly as
we shall see.
I went on to warn that whereas Uganda Police could look the other way
as Wine puffed marijuana for a stage performance, they would promptly
arrest and prosecute Hon Kyagulanyi if they found him with a stick of
Ganja. A jailed bhang-smoker causes no by-election but an imprisoned
MP creates plenty of opportunities. It is evident that he took heed
and has not provided NRM with such a foolish opportunity to make
Kyaddondo East vacant again.
I remember telling some friends in the security services that the
level of command and control exhibited by Wine over his gangs when Hon
Kyagulanyi came to parliament to take oath was evidence of
organisation. Most (including his supporters) had feared chaos in the
city by bhang-crazed celebrants but this did not happen and that was
kudos for Wine and Hon Kyagulanyi! In time, the Arua incidents,
including attacks on FDC allies would prove that outside the Kampala
ghetto community, any visible command and control by Wine was a very
thin veneer.
Although Wine promised to bring the ghetto to parliament, Hon
Kyagulanyi realised the need to give the ghetto some distance and the
first overt act was to mow off his much-loved dreadlocks. Ardent
Rastafarians who had considered him a senior member of the faith were
not amused but this did not lower his ratings in any significant way.
That he had probably never been a Rastafarian eventually came out when
the Roman Catholic Church claimed him as one of its prominent sheep
which had strayed. Indeed he almost became venerated after the Arua
imbroglio and at major feast days he sits in a prominent position at
the Mother Cathedral.
But during the TOGIKWATAKO debate in parliament, the ghetto spirit
seized high ground and we saw honor being cast aside for the
exigencies of the moment. In a recent song Wine actually praises Hon
Kyagulanyi and other MPs for the heavy beating they reportedly
inflicted on unarmed SFC soldiers who came in to stop honorable MPs
from committing mass suicide.
And I believe this euphoria was carried over to Arua if Hon Zaake's
cheeky boast to Hon Norbert Mao, that they had given their SFC
tormentors as much as they received from them was anything to judge
by. Apologists for this new breed of opposition leaders now have the
unenviable task of quietly trying to polish their images while openly
stating that this wantonly crude behavior is the only way to defeat
Museveni and NRM. They are the ones who have to inwardly suppress
their agonised gasps while outwardly praising the remarkable
university don who prefers to teach anatomy in her mother tongue.
To those who describe Hon Kyagulanyi and company as hooligans, Hon
Hussein Kyanjo bluntly states that perhaps it is time for hooligans to
also express themselves since they are Ugandans. It would be unwise to
add to the words of so distinguished a legislator but as far as
slapping President Museveni in the face is concerned, Kyanjo's
prescription is the best.
Others who think they are smarter only see Wine as a Trojan horse to
get them into State House but they are fooling themselves. It would
pay them to discover what secret deals the young man has cut with his
Regent Robert Amsterdam and if they are not in on these deals they
should retreat quickly…
As to singing, the NRM should by now have discovered that whenever
they stop a Bobi Wine concert, Hon Robert Kyagulanyi receives "alms"
via Regent Amsterdam. It is obvious that Hon Kyagulanyi gets more
money from BLOCKED Wine concerts than from Wine's gate collections.
And he gets more political mileage too without sweating for it.
Like I noted above, it will soon be suicidal not to be seen to support
People Power if the mob actions going on are samples. Few in the media
are interested in the medical report on Hon Kyagulanyi's health
status, for which he flew to the USA. Hardly anyone is pressing for
the findings of the fracas in parliament and we hear no demands for
results of the Arua incident in which presidential vehicles were
damaged. Earlier FDC complaints of attacks on their Arua rallies have
evaporated…
Many Political, Cultural and Spiritual leaders are clearly caught in
the People Power euphoria and I believe it is their human right to be
so caught. However, I am also sure that in the privacy of their
confines, they would feel very uncomfortable to read the Gospel
according to Mark 15:16-20 and Matthew 27:15-26. This was the famous
referendum that released the infamous Barabbas from prison and
sentenced the Anointed One to death.
In consoling themselves as they take the plunge, they all privately
whisper, "this is not the one we want but this is the only one we
have…"
