Stanley Currie, the 66-year-old Irishman who went missing after arriving in South Africa, has been found in Johannesburg.

Currie was reported missing by son Mark and brother Richard on 30 December. Following an extensive social media campaign, spearheaded by concerned relatives in association with local Community Crime Watch groups, Currie was found on 7 January, disoriented but uninjured, on the streets of Johannesburg.

Lost on the mean streets of Johannesburg

Steven King, chief executive of the South African Community Crime Watch, confirmed the good news. Speaking to the Irish Sun, King refused to comment on rumours that Currie had been violently mugged of all his possessions, saying:

"He [Stanley Currie] was a little hurt by the sun and disorientated but he is OK and he spoke to his family over the phone earlier today and they were overwhelmed to know he was OK."

While details regarding Currie's disappearance are still shrouded in mystery, King explained that a tip-off had led to his discovery, saying:

"We actually got a tip-off from a member of a community close to the airport in Johannesburg called Edenvale. They said they had come across him as he was looking for the place he was supposed to be staying. As far as we are aware he's been here in South Africa since December 30th. He's been staying here since."

Currie's son Mark took to social media to confirm that his father had been found. The concerned son thanked supporters of their social media campaign, adding that his father was currently recuperating in a medical facility.

A spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that Currie had been found but refused to divulge any further information regarding the disappearance or the discovery.

Stanley Currie comes to South Africa after "online romance"

It's alleged that Currie came to South Africa to meet a woman with whom had been chatting to, online, for at least two years. Stanley's brother, Richard, immediately voiced concerns regarding the suspicious meetup when contact was lost with the smitten 66-year-old.

When Stanley was first reported missing, Richard issued a statement, saying:

"I need your help. Below is a photo of my brother who has been talking to 'someone' on the internet for about two years.

On the 28th December he boarded a flight to Johannesburg on a 'one way' ticket to meet this person.

He hadn't booked any accommodation over there, was carrying a large amount of cash. He suffers from depression and has got heart health problems.

This 'person' who he was going to meet no one from the family have any idea who 'she' is and we are obviously concerned that it is a scam."
