OMG! Saudi teen shares her new life in the West

THE Saudi teenager granted asylum in Canada has been defiantly celebrating her freedom.

Rahaf Mohammed has posted pictures of her trying bacon for the first time and going for coffee while showing her legs.

The 18-year-old captured global attention last week after she fled her family and flew to Thailand then barricaded herself in a hotel room, saying she feared for her life if sent back home. Her family has denied abuse.

Canadian bacon: Her breakfast post and a revealing cup of coffee

Ms Mohammed, who has renounced her last name al-Qunun, arrived in Toronto at the weekend and has since shared a picture on Snapchat of her breakfast of eggs and bacon. She captioned it 'Omg bacon' with heart emojis and the Canadian flag.

She also posted a photo wearing a knee-length grey dress with bare legs as she picked up a Starbucks coffee.

The images came as the head of the refugee agency helping her settle in Canada said it has hired a security guard to ensure 'she is never alone' after she received threats online.

Mario Calla, the executive director of Costi Immigrant Services said: 'She sees these threats. She has left Islam and she basically has broken away from her family, and that scares her.'

The agency is helping her settle in temporary housing and apply for a health card. On Tuesday, Ms Mohammed thanked the Canadian and Thai governments as well as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

In a statement she said: 'I am one of the lucky ones. I know there are unlucky women who disappeared after trying to escape or who could not do anything to change their reality.'

Ms Mohammed had spent a week in limbo in Bangkok after originally intending to fly to Australia to claim asylum.

While barricaded in the hotel, she gained a large following by tweeting her plight, asking for help to avoid deportation. The Thai authorities pledged not to force her to return to Saudi Arabia and last Friday Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said his country would accept her as a refugee.

Her case has drawn attention to Saudi Arabia's strict social rules, which include requiring women have the permission of a male 'guardian' to travel. She has said 'any woman who thinks of escaping, or escapes, will be at risk of persecution'.
