{UAH} Researchers Wanted

Contract Research Officer – Animal Genomic/Proteomic Scientist (Ref:
CRO/GE/0119)(Externally Funded Non Grant-in-Aid)
Organisation's Logo
Teagasc

Basic Function:
An experienced scientist is required to develop a reliable early
pregnancy in dairy cattle based on novel biomarkers of early pregnancy
secreted in milk within 21 days of AI. The studies will involve the
use of targeted molecular approaches including RT-qPCR (miRNA),
LC-MS/MRM (protein) and UPLC (IgG-glycan) to: i) evaluate the efficacy
of these recently identified putative molecular biomarkers of early
pregnancy in a larger population of dairy cattle; ii) fully
characterise their profiles at earlier time-points during pregnancy;
iii) validate the effects of pregnancy on candidate biomarkers; and
iv) translate validated biomarkers into product development formats
for commercial application and licensing as inline measurement
technologies, during milking, and therefore automated pregnancy
diagnosis. Validation will be carried out by measuring putative early
pregnancy biomarkers in blood and milk samples collected daily between
days 12 through 21 post AI from 300 dairy cows.

The successful applicant will interact and collaborate with a team of
scientists across several Teagasc Research Centres and in University
College Dublin and become part of a dynamic team of post-doctoral
researchers, post-graduate students and research scientists.
Candidates should have a background in proteomics and experience of
relevant techniques such as protein isolation and characterization
techniques, pre-fractionation and immune-depletion techniques, 2-D
electrophoresis, HPLC, mass spectrometry and database search, image
analysis immuno- and ligand blotting and protein ELISA.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop a reliable early pregnancy in dairy cattle based on novel
biomarkers of early pregnancy secreted in milk within 21 days of AI.
• Evaluate the efficacy of these recently identified putative
molecular biomarkers of early pregnancy in a larger population of
dairy cattle.
• Fully characterise their profiles at earlier time-points during pregnancy.
• Validate the effects of pregnancy on candidate biomarkers.
• Translate validated biomarkers into product development formats for
commercial application and licensing as inline measurement
technologies, during milking, and therefore automated pregnancy
diagnosis.
• Develop and maintain active collaborative contacts with other
national and international individuals and research institutes.
• Disseminate the results of original research in peer reviewed
international scientific journals, as well as scientific conferences
and technical and popular press.
• Contribute to the teamwork and team-spirit in the group of Teagasc
scientists in Animal Bioscience.
• Develop and maintain active collaborative contacts with other
Teagasc staff and students working in similar scientific areas.

Person Specification
Essential
• Candidates must have an honours Level 8 degree in a related discipline.

Desirable
• A PhD incorporating significant genomics/proteomics experience in a
related area and or Post-Doctoral experience in a closely related
area.
