Police raid home of suspected German paedophile

Police detectives from Kibuli Crime Investigations Unit on Saturday raided the home of Bernhard Glaser, a German operating a humanitarian home "Ssese Humanitarian Services" at Mwena landing site in Kalangala town council for allegedly sexually assaulting minors.
The operation headed by Rosemary Nalubega did not find Mr Glaser at his area of residence. Sources at Kalangala Police Station say, Mr Glaser might have been tipped off by a police officer privy to the investigations and escaped for safety.
Police say they were tipped off by a concerned citizen of how Mr Glaser was using the young children for sex tourism while teaching them reflexology.
His wife Ingrid Hehns and 15 children under his care were taken to the Special Investigations Unit, Kireka for interrogation.

In short
High Court Judge Margaret Oguli rejected his Bail Plea on grounds that the state was still conducting investigations into the matter. She further remanded him until 7th January 2014 when his file will possibly be ready.
Glaser, the director of Ssese Humanitarian Service, an NGO located in Mwena landing site in Kalangala district was arrested after two of the children he takes care of accused him of defilement.
The two victims aged between 12 and 14 claim that Glaser had repeatedly defiled them since 2007. It is alleged that the matter was ignored when the victims initially reported to police and to Daniel Kikoola, the former Kalangala district LC5 Chairman.
However, on November 30th, 2013 Police operatives from the Special Investigations Unit Kampala raided the organization and arrested Glaser. During the operation, police recovered a dildo and lubricants that Glaser allegedly applied to the victims before defiling them.
At least 21 suspected victims of sex abuse were also relocated to Kampala for safe custody.
Last week, Glaser appeared before Mary Ikit, the Masaka Chief Magistrate who charged him with aggravated defilement. Akit also remanded him to Masaka Central prison until 31st December when the case will come up for mention.
But Glaser through his lawyer Ben Okirol petitioned Justice Margret Oumo Oguli of Masaka High Court seeking bail claiming that he needs to acquire specialized medication to treat his worsening high blood pressure and diabetes.
Glaser's lawyers told Justice Oguli that since his arrest late last month, their client's condition has deteriorated because of the persistent failure to get medication from the Prison Health centre.
But Justice Oguli rejected their plea on grounds that the state was still conducting investigations into the allegations against Glaser. She said that since Glaser's file is not yet ready, it has not been transferred from Kalangala to Masaka.
Justice Oguli explained that without the police file with details of the case against Glaser, she would not grant bail to him because she has no basis. She therefore remanded Glaser further until 7th January 2014 when his file will possibly be ready.
Glaser who looked calm shook his head as Masaka Prison officials returned to him to prison.
