Reverend hacked over theft of matooke

Mr Zadoch Bahwera, a reverend at Kyaruyimuka Church of Uganda in Kagamba Sub County in Rakai District is nursing severe wounds after his left arm was cut by a farmer who allegedly caught him stealing matooke from his plantation.
The incident happened Thursday morning at Bukenke village, Kagamba Sub County after Mr Joseph Rukuuta intended to stop Mr Bahwera from taking the matooke on a motorcycle.
The Reverend is now admitted to Rakai General Hospital after his condition worsened from the cells of Kyaluyimuka Police post where he had been detained.
Dr Yasin Kiyemba, operating at Rakai hospital said they are doing everything possible to treat the reverend's arm.
Mr Bahwera has a wife and four children and it is believed he was struggling to get them what to feed on.
Mr Simon Barigye, one of the believers who pray from Kyaruyimuka church said their church has a small congregation and the offertory that comes out can hardly sustain Mr Bahwera's family.
"Our church receives a minimum of 20 believers every Sunday who raise very limited offertory. It's only on public holidays where we increase to around 50 people. Offertory is therefore, too little to sustain his family," he explained.
Mr Barigye further said that their reverend has been a matooke trader in a nearby town of Kyotera.
Mr Ben Nuwamanya, the Rakai District Police Commander confirmed the incident saying Mr Bahwera will be handled according to the law.
"Let us wait for him to heal as investigations go on. We shall handle him according to the law," he said.
Canon Nkambo Mugerwa, who heads the Rakai archdeaconry, said Mr Bahwera was recently reported to be mentally unstable and such an act could have come as a result of the disability.
"I'm a bit sickly but I received that information. Our servant has however, been reported to be mentally unstable. He could be in need of assistance," he explained.
