Yesterday was International #MotherLanguageDay earmarked to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The article from our archives by Bwesigye bwa Mwesigire looks at why schools punish children for speaking African languages. The article explores the various reasons for ostracising African languages in African schools and shows how unconvincing they are, arguing for more vigilance in the defence of the use of local languages in African schools.
