Bill Lajul Allimadi The UPC founders are all departed now. I grew up breathing UPC. It's in my bloodstream. In 1967 while in Washington DC, my Dad Otema Allimadi intimated to me the that there were 4 western countries that did not like the UPC government. These countries were the ones that planned the coup of January 1971. We went into exile to Tanzania and Zambia in the 1970s. While there Mwalimu Nyerere and President Kenneth Kaunda gave us a home. I was the "errand boy" for many of the classified communication of operations and meetings. I recall one meeting at our Oyster Bay residence, it was just my dad Otema Allimadi, Mzee Tito Okello, Mzee Basilio Okello and me. I remember in Lusaka Zambia Jonas Savimbi was my neighbour at Mulungushi Village. After Uganda invaded Tanzania in September 1978, President Nyerere gave us 40 thousand troops to oust the military junta of Field Marshall Idi Amin. We came back after about 6 months of intensive battles with heavy casualties. Looking back, the unconditional love Mwalimu Nyerere had for Milton Obote sowed the seeds of envy in the hearts of Basilio Okello and Yoweri Museveni. I saw everything first hand. And Yoweri Museveni was an occassional visitor at our homes in Dar es Salaam. On one occssion in 1976 while I was in Lusaka, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda delivered a personal message to me from my Dad Otema Allimadi. Three months before the coup in July 1985, I was present during series of meetings between Prime Minister Otema Allimadi and Lt Gen Basilio Okello, whereby the PM tried to dissuade Basilio not to overthrow the government. He implored, "Don't overthrow the government! If you overthrow the government, Museveni will come in. Acholis will suffer, Uganda will suffer...." Of course I lament what could have been of Uganda as a nation, am sad for living most of my life in exile, and my children growing up without a mother in a foreign land, missing out on our Acholi culture. Just as Milton Obote and Otema Allimadi birthed the ideals of Uganda National Congress/ Uganda Peoples Congress, their posterity shall carry them for generations to come.

Democracy is two Wolves and a Lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed Lamb disputing the results.
