| Don't export Germany's 'church tax' to Africa | By Ibrahim Anoba • March 20, 2019 | | Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has called on the government of Uganda to institute a compulsory "church tax," modeled on the German system. Under the German system, government officials deduct a tax from all registered members of religious communities, regardless of whether they attend services. This revenue funds religious leaders and institutions. This arrangement cannot be justified morally or biblically. While the majority of Uganda's population – an estimated 85 percent – is Christian, this is no reason for the church to become another taxpayer-funded entity. Even God did not make payment of a tithe compulsory. The Apostle Paul instructed believers, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (II Corinthians 9:7). If this apostolic exhortation is not enough reason to convince the archbishop, he may want to dwell on the policy's likely negative consequences. | | Acton Line Podcast: Neighborly help for the poor; Americans flunk political science | March 20, 2019 | | On this week's Acton Line podcast we hear about a church-based ministry that engages with the homeless and poor "relationally, responsibly, and compassionately." James Whitford, executive director of Watered Gardens Gospel Rescue Mission in Joplin, Missouri, joins Acton's Andrew Vanderput in a thought provoking conversation on private charity and the intensely personal nature of the organization's outreach. In the second segment, Aquinas College economist David Hebert and Acton's Tyler Groenendal dig into the public's deep dissatisfaction with America's political institutions – and Americans' deep ignorance of how these same organizations work. A 2017 study showed, for example, that more than a third of those surveyed (37 percent) can't name any of the rights guaranteed under the First Amendment. | | | | | Trending on the Powerblog | | Brazil was rocked last week by a deadly shootout in a high school in Suzano, a suburb of Sao Paolo. Beyond the slaughter in itself, there is an anthropological dimension that must be understood. Like a soul-destroying disease, our post-Christian society erases the image of Christ and invites the Book of Job's accusing Devil to rule a world that no longer recognizes Jesus as king. Violence, therefore, becomes the instrument of twisted justice. | | | The latest Marvel film has done well at the box office, and for good reason. It is a solid entry in the MCU. Perhaps more than any hero introduced in the MCU thus far, Carol Danvers embodies the virtue of grit, or perseverance in the face of opposition. | | | Last Thursday, a shooter stormed Masjid Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 50 people. The shooter posted a 74-page manifesto titled The Great Replacement the morning before the attack to explain his motivation. His writing reveals a callous racial collectivist and self-described "eco-fascist" motivated in part by a concern about overpopulation, whose model society is the People's Republic of China, and who believes murdering CEOs, enacting global trade regulations, and raising the minimum wage are keys to preventing "white genocide." | | | For some time, there have been numerous reports of the Chinese government being determined to purge Christian theology and practice of what it calls "Western" content to ensure any religious organization is completely under the Communist regime's control. | | | Failure to reform the national health system and rein in the nation's health care costs has led Prime Minister Juha Sipilä of Finland and his cabinet members to resign. This comes as reports show private citizens in Finland increasingly turning to the free market to meet the shortfalls of the nationalized system. | | | | | | |
