{UAH} Why Kigezi High School was closed indefinitely

The oldest school in Kigezi sub region was closed on Friday until further notice after the students' strike.

The students had striked because the school administration had failed to qualify for the forthcoming Copa Coca-Cola football competitions in Kabale.

The school has for long participated in then competition, and had been popular for sports in the region.

Mr. Stephen Mugume, the school head teacher while speaking to the journalists at the school premises said the board of governors sat and agreed not to participate in the 2019 Copa Coca-Cola competitions because the school had accumulated millions of debts ,and participating in competitions would only multiply the debts.

Mugume added that the competitions pull a lot of money from the school, of about 30 million yearly yet the school
doesn't benefit from it.

Last year, the school was indebted to 800 million Uganda shillings.

Kabale police, led by the Kabale District police commander Mr.
Donald Muhwezi tried to calm down the situation, but the striking students overpowered them.

Mr.Patrick Besigye Keihwa, the Kabale chairperson LCV applauded the
Board of governors' decision to suspend sports competitions saying the school dropped in academic performances and that it was necessary to concentrate on books.
Kigezi high school has produced notable personalities in Uganda like Bank of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, main opposition figure Dr. Kiiza Besigye among others.

Kigezi high School was founded in 1992.
