The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will require a team of Metropolitan Police Royal protection officers to accompany them if they decide to move - and taxpayers may have to foot the bill.
Meghan and Harry are expecting their first child in a few weeks time - and even their royal baby will have a protection officer.
A security consultant estimates a total of £750,000 a year with an additional £250,000 to cover travel, medical and insurance costs for staff.
Former Scotland Yard commander John O'Connor told the Mirror: "Southern Africa is not safe by any means and Islamic State have strongholds across the continent," he told the newspaper.
"It's only right that the Royal Family themselves contribute towards the security costs of protecting Harry and Meghan when they are there."
A shocking report revealed Prince Harry's advisers are lining him up for a "bespoke" role to capitalise on their "rock star" status, which could see them move to Africa for three years.
Their roles will combine charity work on behalf of the Commonwealth.
Some royal experts believe the Government will scrap the royal move, as Britain continues to face Brexit delays and continued austerity from the Tory Government.

Prince Harry spent his gap year in Lesotho in 2004, where he started his own charity Sentebale - dedicated to helping vulnerable children and young people in the country.
A royal source told the Mirror: "Harry has spoken about his love of Africa, in particular Botswana, which he has referred to as his second home.

"Meghan sees the role as hugely exciting and something that could affect real change.
"The Duchess has long been an advocate of global causes, she has worked with the United Nations and charities such as World Vision across Africa and India."
