{UAH} Remembering Chris Hani:

Chris Hani, regarded as probably the best leader Africa has produced, is remembered this week as we celebrate his life on the 25th Anniversary of his assassination. Chris Hani was cut down by agents of the American CIA, working on behalf of the apartheid regime at a time when he was the designated successor to President Mandela, and would have been one of only three communists ever to come to power in Africa, the others being Patrice Lumumba in Congo, Samora Machel in Mozambique and Thomas Sankara in Burkina Fasso. Apart from being the Chairman of the South African Communist Party, Chris Hani was also overall Commander of the South African Black Liberation Army UMKHONTO WE SIZWE and led the bloody struggle for black liberation from the front.,He later served in Nelson Mandela's transitional  post-apartheid government.  

All four African communist leaders including Chris Hani, are remembered for their total commitment to the liberation of Africa, their strong opposition to American Imperialism and neo-colonial control of African resources, to their personal honesty and integrity. and their willingness to lay down their lives for the sake of Africa. Indeed all four were assassinated by American imperialism or agents working for it or  hired for the purpose.

Remembering Chris Hani: 7 quotes

On this day in 1993, the South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary-general, Chris Thembisile Hani also known to many as Tshonyane, was shot and killed in the driveway of his Boksburg home. A Polish immigrant, Janus Walus, was arrested in connection with the murder.

During the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) hearing, Walus said: "I did not want to shoot him in the back. I called to Mr Hani. When he turned I fired the first shot into his body. As he turned and fell down, I fired a second shot at his head."

Hani was killed in front of his 15-year-old daughter Nomakhwezi. The death of the leader of the armed wing of the ANC and popular communist leader on the eve of the first democratic elections in South Africa fuelled fears of violence and threatened the transition to democracy.

We remember the words of the struggle icon.

4. "I disagree with a lot of people who think that de Klerk and others have changed because de Klerk and others have done nothing about removing the [Apartheid] forces that they created".

5. "Some of us have got reservations about the amnesty they are talking about. Before you consider amnesty, let us see what they did. When we were coming back they forced us to fill forms to say what we did and I think that should apply to them as well."

6. "What I fear is that the liberators emerge as elitists who drive around in Mercedes Benz's and use the resources of this country to live in palaces and to gather riches."

7. "My basic objective is struggle in South Africa. You know I could have left you see as others did to go and study, I had a degree from Rhodes University, but I felt that I was not going to go and study. It was my revolutionary duty to be part of the armed struggle of the revolution in South Africa".
