{UAH} Rescued, of found?
Rescued vs found
When Gen. Kazini died in November 2009, there was an intense debate among editors in the newsroom over which word to use in the headline; 'killed' or 'murdered'?
To use 'murdered,' there was need to have evidence that it was planned. Given that the girlfriend (the suspect) was admitting that she had hit the deceased during a fight, it would not be accurate to say 'murdered.'
So was the kidnapped American tourist 'rescued' or 'found' from an editorial perspective?
'Rescue' would entail a suggestion that there was a fight with the kidnappers or some form of confrontation. That would require some sort of evidence.
On the other hand, 'Found' gives the idea that she was left to go or was abandoned in the bushes.
So until, there is concrete evidence that there was a combat engagement with the kidnappers, the meticulous editor would use a headline with 'found.'
That's how words matter in journalism.
