| | Writers Rachael Bale and Natasha Daly traveled around the world for two major pieces on pangolins and wildlife tourism. Featured above is a behind-the-scenes photo from Bale's story, showing the caregiver "bending over with his pick, trying to dig up ants for the pangolin, which is trying to climb up his leg," Bale says. "The story behind that is actually the lede of my article, but the photo didn't make it in. Tamuda (the animal), who was rescued as a baby, was really bonded to his caregiver—his stand-in mother. While the caregiver was trying to show Tamuda how to dig for ants, Tamuda just wanted to be held." Both stories have been in the works for over a year. Daly traveled to six countries on four continents, spending three months in the field. The hardest part? "How difficult it was to uncover the truth in situations and with individuals where their entire intention was to conceal truth," she says. Also, "the sustained exposure to animal suffering." | |
