A GAME OF FOOL-YOU-FOOL-ME 2022 AS RAILA SET TO SHORT CHANGE COAST

BY MOHAMED WARSAMA

I SAID it here in March that Uhuruto duo were playing a game of Fool-You-Fool-Me on 2022 with Raila.

Nothing that has happened since has changed my stand. If anything, analyst Mutahi Ngunyi last week said the same thing too.

Look at what is going on.

Raila was set up by Uhuru to commit himself publicly not once but twice that he and Uhuru were going to China to negotiate Sh 360bn loan for SGR extension to Kisumu.

Then the rug was yanked from under Raila's feet with the announcement that China had again declined to grant a loan for the SGR extension.

Uhuru and Raila returned home one day apart and both went under the radar.

To sooth the injured ego of Raila and placate Luos, Government said it would instead rebuild the current dilapidated line from Naivasha to Kisumu. Days later, Transport CS James Macharia said the renewal of the line would bypass Kisumu.

Then Raila emerged at the week-end to scoff at Ruto's 2022 plans saying Ruto nomination by Jubilee wasn't guaranteed. One wondered why Jubilee nomination affairs should bother Raila. As he said this, Ruto was in Turkana sealing Governor Nanok's defection from Raila to his camp.

Yesterday Raila went to Kisumu with three Cabinet Secretaries to announce that a big business park would be launched in Kisumu in August to employ 25,000.

It is no coincidence that Uhuru chose to emerge from his two-week hiding simultaneously as Raila was announcing the business park project clearly aimed at reassuring Luos that they had not been duped by Uhuru on mega development projects.

Raila's moment of recapturing his people's enthusiasm for The Handshake was ruined somewhat by two developments.

He was heckled by a section of the crowd who shouted that the proposed project would be on their ancestral land, hence unacceptable.

And in Turkana, contrary to media reports of last June that DP Ruto would no longer inspect or commission development projects, Ruto inaugurated the construction of a highway and a teachers college. And today, Ruto signed a Sh 10bn loan agreement with World Bank for development projects in Turkana !

If you look at the balance scale, you will realise that Uhuru is balancing Raila and Ruto with the latter coming out ahead.

Raila made a big blunder when he agreed to have his handshake with Uhuru alone, excluding Ruto and his Jubilee wing which is still formidable from any binding obligations to The Handshake.

Raila should have insisted to Uhuru to include Ruto in the Handshake, thus denying Uhuruto room to escape.

They say once bitten, twice shy. After being let down on SGR extension, Raila seems not to have learnt his lesson. This week he promised massive constitutional changes once BBI report was presented in October. It is the second time he has said this, but what is significantly telling is that he has not been publicly backed up on this by Uhuru.

I fear Uhuru might let him down again in October.

In the meantime, Raila and his coterie of Luo MPs are busy hobnobbing with Mt. Kenya group of Kieleweke MPs with the two sides busy exchanging visits.

They are talking about cutting a Raila-Uhuru alliance deal for 2022 which will result in a new party.

Coast ODM spent ten years under the hot sun sweating blood as they campaigned for Raila whom they voted for 2013 and 2017.

But now it seems if the bromance between Luo Nyanza and Kieleweke goes well, Coast ODM will be shunted to the sidelines as spectators.

Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has foreseen this already and warned in 2022 Mijikenda will not be used by upcountry politicians for getting their votes only.

Big question is: Is Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho aware of this ? And if so, what is his stand ?
