-- This was the third biggest lottery jackpot win in the UK. It was not claimed for about three weeks, until a few days ago.
But look at the scam that took place before the lucky owner collected his loot. A muslim single mother in Birmingham met another muslim woman in a Macdonalds. The man convinced her he was the winner of the £123 million jackpot. He then went on to tell the woman an incredible hard luck story, one that the Nigerian 419 fraudsters would be proud of. Tears in his eyes, he told her his mother was on a dying bed in a hospital in Pakistan- in need of urgent heart by pass surgery. She needed to be operated immediately, otherwise she would die. The hospital would not treat her without the £5,000 fees being paid upfront. He begged the woman for a quick loan to send back to Pakistan so that the operation could be carried out. He quoted the Koran and the Prophet Mohammed who preached for those who are able to help those in dire need. The National Lottery usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to verify claims, especially of large amounts, and he said by that time his mum would have died. He promised to give her £500,000 as a thank you in return for her kindness, as soon as he cashed his winnings.
The woman was so moved by the muslim man's sad story she agreed to borrow £5,000 from her bank and gave it to him. She did;t mind taking the loan because she would get her promised £500,000 in a couple of weeks or so.
As soon as money changed hands, that was the end of the promised £500,000 share, the end of the muslim man, and the end of her loan money. She had fallen victim to the simplest scam in the book.
