{UAH} Ocen, Edmund, Bobby//Sonko sues tabloid over HIV story

As a professional journalist, I'm a passionate defender of the freedom of the press.

My position, however, is a qualified one, because, as we all know, there is no such thing as absolute freedom. The Star tabloid ran a particularly hurtful article the other land, alleging that the flamboyant Governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonko, was infected with HIV.

The paper cited some court documents in support of its report. Now, Sonko says he is not HIV+, and has gone ahead to sue the Star for all sorts of damages.

Being HIV+ does not, and should not disqualify anyone from holding an office; it's not even evidence of bad or immoral behavior. So, the Star news magazine must explain itself, even if it relied wholly on the alleged court papers. Why would Sonko+ HIV status be newsworthy, unless the magazine hoped to cast aspersion on his character?

Sonko has a case against the Star.
