{UAH} RWANDAN CUT-THROAT KAYIBANDA
Tony Owana/ Annette/ Ikanos/ Gwokto/Alan Barigye,
Forgive my sensitivity, but would you allow your child to carry such a shocking picture below IN THEIR PHONE OR WALLET and show it to their friends or classmates? Would you allow them to introduce the thug in the picture as a president of their country? Surely, as parents, we have a responsibility to care about the feelings of our children. In my view, no parent should ever allow such a shocking picture anywhere near a child.
It reminds me of a serious incident involving my own daughter. At a the time of the Bududa landslides, which claimed many lives in Mbale, a teacher played a video of the mud slides in my daughter's London primary school, in a class on the subject of climate change. In the short clip, the video showed Kayibanda dressed in military fatigues, and with an AK47 strapped across his potbelly. The Rwandan outlaw carried such an aggravated look on his face you thought he was about to shoot the threatening clouds above.
My daughter and two other Ugandan children in the class were so shocked- they just wished the ground would open up and swallow them. Such was their embarrassment and shame. The three children decided to walk out of the class.
Later on the school investigated and concluded it was totally inappropriate for the school to show a picture of a thug or what looked like dangerous lunatics or gunmen in a classroom. Classrooms are for learning not showing the pictures of maniacs or cut-throats.
The school concluded showing the picture of Kayibanda to refugee children who were his victims deeply upset them, hurt their feelings and subjected them to ridicule and laughter from their fellow children as no child in the class could believe that Kayibanda was a president of any country in the world- they clearly thought Kayibanda and his party were dangerous lunatics about to strike.
The school apologised to us Ugandan parents for causing distress to our children. Showing the video in class violated the school's safe guarding policies which are to protect the emotional well being of all children by not exposing them to dangerous images or videos of thugs and killers.
