Wimbledon veteran Venus Williams stunned by 15-year-old Cori Gauff in first round

FIVE-TIME Wimbledon champion Venus Williams has been dumped out of the 2019 tournament in the first round by 15-year-old Cori Gauff.

The young American stormed to victory on Court 1, winning 6-4, 6-4 in one of the biggest upsets in the sport's history.

Gauff, nicknamed Coco, broke her fellow American in the fifth game and then held to love with the cheekiest of backhand drop shots before closing out the set 6-4 with a punch and a roar.

Back-to-back double faults in the fifth game of the second set by Williams saw her broken to love.

The veteran broke back for 4-4 but Gauff took the next game against the serve and then dramatically held at the fourth time of asking to send the crowd wild.

Gauff described being drawn against 39-year-old Williams as a 'dream' before taking to the court.

And her tennis a thing of beauty as she stunned the Wimbledon crowd on her way to victory.

As her match-winning point saw Williams' shot hit the net, Gauff fell to her knees struggling to hold back tears.

Gauff previously triumphed at the junior French Open in 2018 at the age of 14.
