The 1,000 shilling bank note issued in 1984 by Bank of Uganda during the second UPC government of Milton Obote.

The 1,000 shilling note was the largest currency note in circulation in Uganda at the time and featured the portrait of President Obote and the signatures of the-then Governor of Bank of Uganda, Leo Kibirango, and Bank of Uganda's Secretary Robert Elangot.

Bank of Uganda commemorates its 50th anniversary in August 2016.

For an idea of its value, the 1,000 shillings of 1984 on the second (termed "Window Two") of the two-tier foreign exchange market would be the equivalent of about 15,850 shillings in 2016 when adjusted for inflation. (Timothy Kalyegira Picture Library)
