"Every Airline Has A Manual Backup" – Uganda Airlines On Hand-Written Boarding Pass

In the wake of criticism on social media after a photo of a hand written boarding pass for one of the passengers who flew Uganda Airlines on Tuesday, the airline has come out to clarify on the incident.

As Uganda Airlines made its inaugural flight to Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, one of the highlights that became a topic online was that a passenger, a journalist, had been issued a hand written last boarding pass. Under normal standards, the passenger details on the pass should be printed.

A number of Ugandans shared the photo widely on different social platforms, mocking the airline as ill-prepared for commercial operations.

However, on Wednesday, the Uganda Airlines Commercial Director, Jeniffer Bamuturaki told reporters that hand-writting of the board pass was simply because there were last minute changes made on the list of passengers.

"What people must understand is that while the world is automated, sometimes systems slow down," Bamuturaki said.

"And when systems slow down, airlines must have a backup – something manual. So you have to have a manual boarding pass that you provide," she said.

She says that being an inaugural flight, some things were not got correctly, including late reservations, which prompted use of a manual boarding pass.

"Changes happen but after an accepted time. Yesterday was unique. A lot of changes were made at the counters as you check in".

"Usually when you are checking in, you don't have a reservation system to start making tickets there. That's a separate entity. So you have to move to the reservations do have that made. To avoid further delays, we had to move into the manual mode to accommodate the passengers and the time we had to leave".

She said that the phenomenon of manual boarding pass will be common in areas where internet is a challenge, citing Mogadishu.

"So, it is normal. We saw it as normal".

Bamuturaki appealed to Ugandans to embrace and support their national airline rather than castigate it and pick on the negatives.

She says that the sustainability of Uganda Airlines lies in the choice by Ugandans themselves to utilize it as they travel.

"We will need everyone's support. Rather than bashing us on social media, it is one thing to bash what you have not experienced. Fly with us and speak from an informed point".

"If you fly with us, we shall be able to stay in the air. All these airlines are coming here and picking passengers whether Ugandans or visitors, so why shouldn't Uganda Airlines start and also take these people".

While the airline was being trolled for the boarding pass, some people posted sharing their experiences on reputable airlines where they were issued hand-written boarding passes.

Meanwhile, the airline began its commercial operations on Wednesday with a flight to Nairobi at 6:05am and another one to Juba, South Sudan.
