{UAH} Foxes are small, smart and secretive creatures

Foxes are small, smart and secretive creatures, which is probably what makes them so fascinating and that is why we will be counting down fun facts about them on today's Nature and Wildlife.

1. There are about 12 species of fox around the world. They can be found in any continent except Antarctica.

2. Foxes are nocturnal animals, which means they are most active during the night.

3. The feeding habits of a fox are opportunistic. Foxes are omnivores, they eat a variety of plant and animal matter, depending on what's available in their habitats. Their love for rodents plays an important role in controlling ecological balance as it keeps a check on rodents population. 😀

4. Because their eyes are specially adapted to night vision, they make great night time hunters.

5. Foxes are very fast! They can run up to 40 miles per hour (70 km/hr), making them one of the fastest animals in the world.

6. Foxes are solitary animals unlike wolves and dogs, as they like to hunt their preys alone rather than in packs. Just like cats, foxes often play with their preys before they kill it. If they are not hungry, they may catch a mice just for the sake of playing and will let it go when they are done.

7. Foxes have excellent hearing ability. They hear low-frequency sounds such as rodents digging underground. Red foxes can reportedly hear a watch ticking 40 yards away!

8. Female foxes are pregnant for only 53 days, making women everywhere jealous of their gestation period.

9. Foxes can use the earth's magnetic field to track down preys. They are able to use the field to judge the distance as well as the direction of the prey. They have whiskers on their legs and face, which help them to navigate.

10. In the wild, foxes tend to live for around 3 to 6 years, but some foxes have been known to be older than 13 years in captivity.
