{UAH} Good Samaritan
Alan Barigye /ikanos/Annette,
-- I still keep getting a lot of requests for help from many Ugandans and even other nationalities who have come across me on social media . People want help on all manner of things. Some are looking for love, others are students wanting help with writing theses and dissertations, or comments on academic subjects, scholarships etc.
This last week a young Ugandan girl contacted me for help. She is an aspiring writer with a number of of short stories under her belt, which are fermenting in her laptop and have not had any exposure. She wanted my help with getting her stories published and she sent me two to read. They are quite good. I looked around and found a number of international writing competitions for her to enter as I thought winning or even being shortlisted would kick-start her writing career and attract the attention of publisher. In fact the commonwealth organisation I used to work for many years ago sent her an application form to enter their bi-annual competition, and I thought I had done very well for the girl.
To my surprise, the girl came back to me today to say there is a non-refundable registration fee of £15 which she does not have, and could I pay it for her?
I have already done so much for somebody I just met on social media and now she wants an arm and a leg. And going by previous experience, giving a Ugandan girl money is the same as opening the floodgates because she is bound to come back to ask for more.
It is so frustrating, but I have to help her. It affects me very badly if I let people down, especially when they have genuine needs. It is very sad that a university graduate cannot afford £15 to kick start her career.
