{UAH} Horses have been called the noblest of all creatures
Horses have been called the noblest of all creatures and it's easy to see why. They are historial animals in Islam. Horses are majestic animals that are as powerful as they are beautiful. Humans and horses have partnered for thousands of years. Forget dogs, horses have been man's original best friend and they are very obedient. They have taken men everywhere they asked them to, including the battle fields! On today's Nature and Wildlife we will learn some facts about horses which you may not have known.
1. Horses are called different names depending on their gender and age. A male horse is called a stallion, a female horse is a mare, a young male horse is a colt, a young female horse is a filly and a baby horse is a foal.
2. Horses have the largest eyes of any land animal, and the fact that they are located on both sides of their head means they can see almost 360 degrees at one time.
3. A horse's teeth take up a larger amount of space in their head than their brain. Its brain only weighs around 22 ounces, making it just half the weight of a human brain.
4. While humans have just 3 ear muscles, horses have 10. This means they can move their ears 180 degrees and can single out a particular area to listen.
5. Typically, the direction a horse's ears are pointing is most often where they are looking. If the ears are pointing in different directions, the horse is looking at two different things at the same time.
6. You can tell if a horse is cold by feeling behind their ears. If the area directly behind their ears is cold, it typically indicates that the rest of the horse is cold as well.
7. Horses drink a lot of water, at least 25 gallons of water a day. In fact, water makes 50 per cent of a horse's total body weight. A horse can also produce about 10 gallons of saliva a day.
8. Horse's are often seen in photographs " laughing" or "smiling" but they don't smile to show happiness. They are actually engaging in nose-enhancing technique known as "flehmen" to determine whether the smell is good or bad, this movement actually helps them to smell better.
9. You can generally tell the difference between male and female horses by their number of teeth: males have 40 while females have 36.
10. Horses can sleep standing up or lying down. Interestingly, they have a lookout! A group of horses will not go to sleep at the same time, at least one of them will stay awake to watch out for the others.
That's all we have for today, join us next week for more on Nature and Wildlife.
