{UAH} Opande, Kenyan soldier who preaches peace across Africa
Folks;
I'm thrilled that this Pan-African soldier has written about his stellar career.
I got to meet Daniel Opande, then a Brigadier, in 1990, when I arrived in Namibia as part of the UN bureaucrats dispatched from New York to set the framework for elections. For nearly a year, though I reported directly to the head of UN Mission, I interacted with Opande on a regular basis.
Opande could skip the formalities that go with his status, and join us in for a meal, or invite us to his residence for some Kenyan tea and mandazi.
Given the checkered relationship between Luo soldiers and the Kenyan governments, it's testament to Opande's sheer professionalism and command of respect, that he continued to rise through the ranks from the first Kenyatta administration of the 60's, through Moi to Kibaki era.
Africa honors you for a job well-done, Lt. Gen Daniel Opande.
