{UAH} Our History File today is about the man who survived an execution!

When an individual is sentenced to death, he starts making peace with his God because he's as good as dead. Surviving an execution is generally seen as something which is impossible. Our History File today is about the man who survived an execution!

During the Mexican Revolution, 25 year-old Wenseslao Moguel fought on the side of Pancho Villa, one of the famous leaders of the revolution. Pancho Villa's revolutionary force was defeated in March 1915 and Wenseslao Moguel was captured by Mexican authorities and was immediately sentenced to death by firing squad without any form of trial or defense.

During the Mexican Revolution, a firing squad was the preferred means of execution. The squad was comprised of nine soldiers who would all fire their weapons at the same time. The tenth shooter, an officer, was to aim at one of the prisoner's vital organs and deliver the coup de grace (the kill shot) to ensure death.

On 18th of March 1915, Moguel was placed in front of a firing squad consisting of 9 soldiers. The officers were commanded to fire and nine bullets went into his body. The tenth shooter (the officer) stepped up, delivered the last shot which went through Moguel's head at close range and he was left for dead.

Although in excruciating pain, he waited for his executioners to leave and miraculously crawled away and looked for help. Three blocks away, at the Church of St James Apostle in downtown Santiago Tequixquiac, he was found by a parishioner who looked after him until he was healed.

After his recovery, Moguel gained the nickname "El Fusilado" which means "the executed one" In 1937, Moguel became a celebrity after appearing and sharing his story in a popular radio show in Cleveland, Ohio. Although his face was disfigured by the bullet that went in just below his cheekbone on the right side and exited below his eyes on the left side, he lived until the age of 85 and died in Mexico in 1975.
