{UAH} Restaurants.

I watch an American programme on food and restaurants and I am intrigued how waiters and waitresses are paid. Do they have fixed salaries or do they get remunerated by  tips diners leave on the table?

 In this series I am watching, the manager seems to be punishing a waiter because he has ended a relationship with her. She doesn't allocate any tables to him, so he is left hanging around the restaurant doing nothing and is complaining bitterly. 

Such a method of paying workers is very unorthodox, very unpredictable and very unfair as there is no set amount a diner will tip and some may not tip at all.
