THE DAY INDIAN WOMEN STOOD UP
AKKU YADAV was the worst serial rapist India has known. He targeted members of the "Untouchable" caste, the lowest members of India's society who he knew would be laughed out of police stations and lawyers offices. For years, neither the police nor the authorities did anything to end Yadav's reign of terror.

Akku Yadav thought he was untouchable, until on Aug. 13, 2004, the women of an Indian village said they had had enough and were going to stop his raping spree and end his reign of terror.
While he was being escorted to court for yet another rape hearing, a mob of village women descended on him, leaving nothing behind but a gory mess.
Armed with vegetable knives, stones, and chili powder, almost 200 of Yadav's victims swarmed the courthouse.
"We can't both live on this Earth together," one woman he had taunted cried. "It's you or me."
Then, she began hitting him with her sandal
Within seconds, the other women had joined her, throwing their chili powder in his face, throwing the stones at his head, stabbing any part of him they could reach with their vegetable knives. His guards fled, terrified of the women, but they didn't notice. For over ten minutes they attacked Yadav, stabbing him no less than 70 times. One enraged woman even cut off his penis.
Akku Yadav, notorious rapist was left an unrecognisable heap of a corpse, a far cry from the monster who terrorised women for decades. With their own hands, women called untouchable had brought a reign of terror to an end.
