Obama’s envoy makes secret visit to Museveni

Kampala- Former United States top diplomat for Africa, Johnnie Carson, has held back-to-back meetings with President Museveni and Foreign Affairs minister Sam Kutesa, during a surprise visit to Uganda this week.

Mr Carson reportedly carried a special message from President Barack Obama to Mr Museveni, but Ugandan officials and the US Mission in Kampala would not confirm anything.

“It’s my understanding that [Mr] Johnnie Carson is in town for personal business, and I am not aware of any message that he may or may not be carrying from one person to another,” said Mr Chris Brown, the US embassy spokesman.

The visiting former diplomat met Mr Kutesa over dinner at the latter’s residence in Nakasero, a Kampala suburb, on Thursday.

“We are friends and Ambassador Carson is here in a personal capacity,” Mr Kutesa told Sunday Monitor yesterday, confirming that the former US assistant secretary of State for African Affairs separately met with President Museveni on Friday, but said there was no special White House message conveyed.

Mr Kutesa said: “Ambassador Carson visited in his personal capacity to do some business for America’s interests,” but declined to give specifics.
