{UAH} Falcons kill with their beaks
A falcon is a predatory bird that is both a precision hunter and expert aviator. We take to the skies today to learn more about this unique bird.
1. There are about 40 species of falcons worldwide. They are widely distributed on all continents of the world except Antarctica.
2. Falcon is the fastest animal on the planet. It can reach speed of 200 miles per hour when it rushes toward the prey. Tapered wings allow quick change of direction during the flight.
3. Falcon is a carnivore. Its diet is based on rodents, frogs, fish, bats and small birds.
4. Falcons are strong, fast fliers with great aerial agility, which makes them successful hunters capable of taking prey 6 times their own body weight! Usually they kill cleanly, breaking the back of their victims.
5. Falcons kill with their beaks, using a "tooth" on the side of their beaks, unlike the hawks, eagles, and other birds of prey, which use their feet.
6. Falcons have excellent eyesight which they use to locate their prey. Scientists estimate that falcon eye is 8 times better than the sharpest human eye. This allows the birds to spot small prey from nearly two miles away, and then swoop down precisely to catch it.
7. Hours after eating, a falcon will regurgitate a pellet, containing any feathers, fur or small bones swallowed accidentally.
8. Peregrine falcon chicks mature quickly. They have tremendous appetites and double their weight in just around 6 days. At three weeks of age they are already around 10 times their size at birth.
9. Falcons are generally solitary birds and only really come together to mate. Although falcons are known to stay in the same place, many species of falcon are migratory birds and have been known to travel to several continents in a particular year.
10. There's no playing around for these birds: Falcons devote themselves to one partner for their reproductive years. Falcon has an average lifespan of around 15 years.
