IF MOUNTAIN ELGON MYSTERIOUSLY ERUPTS, CAN I GET COMPENSATED?

It is said that Mountain Elgon was once the highest mountain in Africa. However, due to volcanic eruptions that occurred over centuries, it kept reducing in height. Eventually, the eruptions stopped, and it became a dormant volcano.

But imagine Mount Elgon one day mysteriously erupts, with no scientific explanation whatsoever. The eruptions are so gruesome that your house and everything that you own is destroyed by the lava. Should government or your insurance company compensate you for the property that has been destroyed?

First of all, with regard to government, that is a NO! The government has no legal obligation to compensate you for property that has been destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The legal obligation of government is to prepare you for the eruption by informing you when it may happen and what to do when the eruption occurs. This would be under the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness.

Alternatively, if you have an insurance cover, your compensation highly depends on your policy and the agreement between you and the insurance company. Most people's insurance policies do not cover acts of god (Force Majure). Force Majure or what is commonly known as "Acts of God" are natural hazards outside human control. Such hazards include earthquakes, floods, tsunami, lightening and even volcanic eruptions. A volcanic eruption cover is usually available either by endorsement for an additional charge or by purchasing a volcanic eruption policy. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that most insurance companies will not issue volcanic eruption policies during or immediately after a volcanic eruption.
