{UAH} MURDER IS NORMAL IN UGANDA NOW!
By Saasi Marvin
This is a recent photograph of my friend Counsel Peter Kibilango, a practicing Advocate with whom I worked on some cases involving human rights and political activists.
On Monday this week, Peter went to a mobile money agent in Mutungo carrying with him his phone and a charger. As he was making the transaction, he placed his charger atop the agent's counter. A short while later, a soldier came to presumably complete a transaction with the same agent, and placed his phone near Peter's charger. After the transaction, Peter mistakenly picked both his charger and the soldier's phone, and walked away innocently. When the soldier noticed, he pursued Peter who had by that time taken just a few steps away and accused him of stealing the phone. Peter, in his usual soft-spoken self, explained himself and the two agreed to conclude the matter at a nearby police station. But as they proceeded to the police post, Boda Boda riders gave chase, pounced on Peter and clobbered him until Police intervened and rushed him to hospital. Despite his family paying UGX 17M in hospital bills per day to keep him alive, he died today morning 😔.
Peter is the latest in a string of innocent Ugandans who have lost their lives to mob 'justice'. Some people who support mob justice that I've interacted with tend to justify it by citing their distrust for Uganda's formal justice system - thanks to the total collapse of our rule of law infrastructure as a result of bad governance. Others give the excuse of having fallen victim to merciless robbers/thieves at one point in their lives. Both excuses, although understandable, are unacceptable. The likelihood of killing an innocent person; the indignity; the pain; and the cruel denial of a fair hearing that come with being lynched by a mob will always trump any excuse for mob justice, however compelling such excuse may be.
It is up to us as citizens to decide whether the various injustices we routinely suffer due to bad governance turn us into savages; or they make us angry enough to remove the main obstacle we face in our efforts to address these injustices: Mr. Museveni's corrupt regime. Once this is done, we shall then be able to exchange ideas on how the justice, law and order sector can regain our trust - and save innocent souls along the way. Rest in peace Counsel Peter 😔. Next time one of these mob justice supporters needs the services of a lawyer of your calibre, they won't be available
