{UAH} The New Urban Science?

Call for Papers: The New Urban Science?
American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting 2020
Denver, USA, 6-10 April 2020

Organisers: Andrew Karvonen (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and
Bas van Heur (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)

Cities have long served as objects of study for scientists interested
in the cultural, political, economic, technological, and physical
aspects of society. Today, a 'new urban science' is rapidly emerging
due to the rise of digital tools and networking technologies, the
proliferation of experiments and laboratories, increasing calls for
democratically-driven knowledge production, the influence of global
networks of knowledge exchange and learning, the gradual shift of
academic research towards solutions and academic impact, and so on. Is
this move toward more 'scientific' approaches to understanding and
influencing cities simply a revival of the Chicago School of Sociology
of the early twentieth century? Is it the next iteration of
computational and large-scale modelling approaches that first emerged
in the 1960s? Or does it embody genuinely new ways of 'knowing
cities'?

In this session, we invite critical insights and reflections on the
contested notion of the 'new urban science' as it relates to an
increasing emphasis on empirics and evidence, transdisciplinary
collaborative partnerships and coalitions, the embrace of uncertainty
and recursive modes of knowledge production, and so on. Invited topics
include but are not limited to:

- Digitalisation, ubiquitous sensoring and informatics
- Empirical testing and modelling activities
- Collaboration and quadruple helix partnerships
- Citizen science and democratic knowledge production
- University outreach and impact agendas
- Global networks of knowledge exchange
