WHAT ARE YOU ENTITLED TO WHEN COHABITING?
Cohabiting is a situation where two people are not legally married, but are living together as a couple.
In some countries in the world there is recognition given to partners who are cohabiting, however in Uganda there is no legal recognition or status for cohabiting couples.
If you are cohabiting with a person, it is presumed that you are merely living with each other out of free will and are neither in a legally binding relationship nor responsible for each other.
This means, that if you share any property- for example you share the house that you live in, or a plot of land have the property title recorded in both your names because otherwise only the person who's title is on the property will be considered the owner and you- the other person (should your partner pass on) will not be able to inherit or claim any interest in it.
Secondly, if you are sharing all your property with your partner, it may be wise to have a contract which stipulates what belongs to you and what- should you break up, you shall remain with. Otherwise, you could face loosing property which you gave away during more passionate times.
All in all, make sure that you aren't flying blind and relinquishing your rights to another while in a relationship which is not recognized by the law- if the law does not automatically protect you then you may have to take proactive (and legal) methods of ensuring that you are protected.
