THE NHS AT 70 YEARS -REMEMBERING ANEURIN BEVAN-

Aneurin Bevan was the UK Socialist Who Created The Best Health Care System The World Has Known.

The principle of healthcare free at the point of delivery based on need, not wealth, was something that had never been attempted before, but Anuerin Bevan, minister of health and housing in the Clement Attlee post-war Labour government, rolled it out into operation on 5 July 1948, changing thinking on health care in the world forever.

 

The principle and creed of the NHS has become firmly embedded into UK national life and remains the biggest legacy socialists have left for the UK and for humanity.

 

For Aneurin Bevan, the creation of the NHS proved far more significant than a personal triumph. His work created a lasting institution that changes the lives of millions and it is a template that has been copied in every developed country in the world, except the USA.

 

In his book, In Place of Fear, Bevan states: "Society becomes more wholesome, more serene, and spiritually healthier, if it knows that its citizens have at the back of their consciousness the knowledge that not only themselves, but all their fellows, have access, when ill, to the best that medical skill can provide."
