Apple CEO Tim Cook and President Donald Trump will tour an Apple manufacturing plant in Austin, Texas, on Wednesday, the same day that the tech giant announced it has begun construction on a new plant in the city.

Trump and Cook will tour the plant in Austin where Mac Pro computers are made. Apple contractor Flex Ltd. assembles some of the company's laptops at the plant. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow are expected to accompany Trump.

As for the new plant, Apple hasn't announced what it will build at its $1 billion, 3 million square-foot facility. Apple said the plant initially will house 5,000 employees, later growing to 15,000.

The plant is expected to open in 2022.

"Building the Mac Pro, Apple's most powerful device ever, in Austin is both a point of pride and a testament to the enduring power of American ingenuity," said Cook. "With the construction of our new campus in Austin now underway. Apple is deepening our close bond with the city and the talented and diverse workforce that calls it home."

The Trump administration has been pushing U.S. companies to build more facilities in the United States and eschew the cheaper labor costs in China. in 2018, Apple added 6,000 jobs to its U.S. workforce, and in 2019 the company said that it was responsible for 2.4 million American jobs.

Trump is currently considering whether to exempt Apple goods from a 15% tariff that took effect Sept. 1, covering about $110 billion in Chinese imports including the Apple Watch, AirPods and parts for the iPhone, according to Bloomberg.

The company has previously announced plans to grow its employee base in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, Calif., over the next three years by adding 1,000 jobs in each city.

It is also focused on adding hundreds of jobs in Pittsburgh; New York; Boulder, Colo.; Boston; and Portland, Oregon.
