Trump donates third-quarter salary to fight opioid crisis

President Trump is reportedly donating his third-quarter salary to help fight the nation’s opioid crisis.

The president gave the $100,000 he would have been paid during the third quarter to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health, which oversees a number of the Department of Health and Human Services's programs, the White House said, according to The Associated Press.

The funds are being earmarked “to continue the ongoing fight against the opioid crisis,” the White House said.

Trump pledged when he took office that he would not accept his $400,000 annual salary that comes with serving in the Oval Office. During his White House tenure, he has donated it in quarterly installments to various government agencies.

He donated his first-quarter salary from 2019 to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and his second-quarter salary to the Office of the Surgeon General to help address the opioid epidemic and the growing use of e-cigarettes by teenagers and children.

In 2018, Trump donated his salary to the Small Business Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, DHS and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

In 2017, he gave his earnings to the Transportation Department, the Health and Human Services Department for the opioid epidemic, the National Park Service and the Education Department.

More than 49,000 people died from opioid overdoses in 2017, according to provisional numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
