{UAH} Not many may have heard of the tiny island of Guadalupe
Not many may have heard of the tiny island of Guadalupe, except those who do for religious reasons, but Guadalupe is a country found in the Caribbean islands, and it has a lot more than just sites of apparition and we will look at some of them.
1) Prior to Christopher Columbus' arrival Guadeloupe had been known as 'Karukera', which means, 'The Island of Beautiful Waters'. The name says it all, the beaches here are just wonderful.
2) Guadalupe has a population of about 450,000 making it one of the least populated countries in the world.
3) There is an active volcano in Guadeloupe called La Soufriere, on the island Basse-Terre. Aside the threat to life, when this volcano erupts, it is usually a wonderful sight to behold, from afar of course.
4) The islands have lovely white sand beaches, a rainforest that is brimming with wildlife, and, if that weren't enough, the highest waterfall in the Caribbean
5) The famous dance of the island is called the biguine, which is still performed in colourful Creole dress. The dance is like the traditional Caribbean dances, quite colorful.
6) A narrow channel, the Riviere Salee, divides Guadeloupe proper into two islands: the larger, western Basse-Terre and the smaller, eastern Grande-Terre. When viewed from above, this looks wonderful.
7) Guadeloupe is an archipelago of nine inhabited islands, including the butterfly shaped islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, Marie-Galante, La Desirade, Iles des Saintes (2), Saint-Barthelemy, Iles de la Petite Terre, and Saint-Martin (the French part of the island of Saint Martin).
8) 95% of the population is Roman Catholic while the others are Hindu, pagan African and Protestant. It is believed to be one of the main apparition sites.
9) Due to extensive hunting many years ago, a large proportion of the Guadeloupean wildlife was eradicated, although there are currently 17 species of mammal that call this beautiful country home, including the Mongoose, Agouti and Guadeloupe Raccoon.
10) Guadeloupeans live for an average of 78 years. This is considered generally low and is due to their rough climate.
