{UAH} A church and mosque wedding as former Makerere Guild Minister gets married

By Maria Immaculate Owechi

Last week, Salim Katumba married Julian Owasiimire, a former Makerere University Guild Social Affairs Minister.

The couple had a traditional kuhingira ceremony on Wednesday, December 11 and on Friday December 13 of the same week, they held their religious ceremonies in a church and mosque since the two belonged to different religious backgrounds.

The Catholic church can on rare occasions allow a Catholic to be married to a person from a non-Christian religion. This is referred to as disparity of worship.

On Friday morning at 10 am, the couple first exchanged vows at St Charles Lwanga, Ntinda. Thereafter, in the afternoon at 2 pm, they had their Nikkah ceremony at Buziga Islamic Theological Institute Mosque.

Katumba was elegant in a black trouser paired with a white coat that had multiple maroon buttons that matched well with his bowtie and waistcoat.

His bride looked lovely in a long-sleeved ballroom gown. For the accessories, she wore a pair of long statement earrings and a pearl designed accessory for her natural hair.

For the Nikkah ceremony, the bride wore a white veil in accordance with the Islamic dress code for brides.

Later in the day, the couple hosted their guests to a colourful reception at Speke Resort, Munyonyo. Notable politicians like Gen. Mugisha Muntu, and Hon Gerald Karuhanga were in attendance.

At the reception the groom changed into an Arab inspired navy blue suit with gold embroidery at the collar and hands.

His wife looked dazzling in a red custom made gown fused with pieces of golden fabric. Her gown had a dash bows at the front and back, bringing out the celebratory effect.

The ceremony was also colorfully decorated with a dash of flowers in dark, bright and light shades as incorporated in the outfits of the entourage.
