Insisting that your advice is accepted is the best way to have it rejected.

Being forceful with your advice isn't just when it happens at gunpoint. Rather, your "suggestion" can trigger resistance when:

a) the tone isn't compassionate
b) the wording is too assertive
c) the timing is poorly calculated
d) the advice is too frequent
e) the relationship loses its warmth if the advice isn't accepted

And as one scholar puts its, "If their defenses are too strong, it's probably because you still haven't used the weapon of mercy."
