{UAH} NORTHERN BREAKWAY FROM UGANDA BECOMING A BURNING ISSUE

Frank Mujabi/ Tony Owana/ Annette/ Ikanos/ Alan Barigye/ Katerregga

Very many educated people in northern Uganda, such as Okello Lucima below, are beginning to ask serious questions about whether the north should remain part of Uganda. The question that Buganda raised post independence is beginning to come back again and to be the dominant issue on the dinner table. It is clear, even to a communist like myself, that the north has got no future in Uganda and is better off on its own, however difficult the beginning will be. In any new Uganda that is constructed after Kayibanda Rubatasirwa, the north is still going to have only a peripheral or bridesmaid role. I have not made up my mind, but increasingly I don' t see any reason why the north should bother fighting the Rwandan occupation when it can simply break away and hold its future in its own hands. A significant section of Uganda society has allowed the Rwandan occupation of our country to stagger into the 35th the year and this is still likely to continue. I do not see a future in a united Uganda. We are too different as a people, and the gulfs that separate us- the major one being the  emotional gulf- are too wide and too poisoned to allow for any national unity government to emerge in Uganda in the next 100 years.

Two things must occupy the north right now: 1. Ousting M7; 2. Envisioning a post NRA society and the place of the north in it.
