{UAH} What you should know about India's 'anti-Muslim' citizenship bill

India's lower House of Parliament (Lok Sabha) is debating the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which will grant citizenship to religious minorities from neighbouring countries, with legal experts saying it violates the country's secular constitution.

The bill, which seeks to amend the 1955 citizenship law, aims to give citizenship to "persecuted" minorities - Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians - from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan, but excludes Muslims

This follows the The draft National Register of Citizens (NRC), published in 2018, which has effectively stripped four million Muslim  people in Assam of citizenship, sparking fears of mass deportations of all Muslims from the northeastern state.

Critics say it is the latest move by the right-wing government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to advance the rights of India's Hindu majority at the expense of its many minorities.
