Lawsuit demands Turkey repay Egypt 23 million gold coins

An Egyptian court is set to consider next month a lawsuit demanding Turkey to repay Egypt more than 23.1 million gold coins allegedly seized by the Ottoman era.

The lawsuit, filed by Egyptian lawyer Hamido Gamil, asks the Egyptian government to take all international legal procedures to reclaim the money paid to the Ottoman Empire between 1915 and 1955, Egypt Today reported on Saturday.

Gamil says the gold payment was illegal as it was after Ottoman guardianship over Egypt had effectively ended in 1914.

Turkish-Egyptian relations have been at a low point since 2013, when the Egyptian military overthrew President Mohamed Morsi.

The rift between the two countries widened when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Libya's U.N-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj signed agreements in November drawing maritime borders in the Mediterranean Sea and enhancing military cooperation.

Egypt is among the countries seeking to build a pipeline carrying gas to Europe across the waters in the agreement.
