Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo says, while participating in the President's trek, he rang Deputy IGP Gen Muzeyi Sabiiti to inquire about why Bobi Wine wasn't being allowed to hold his consultation meetings and that the explanation the DIGP gave wasn't satisfactory to him.

Opondo told Capital Gang this Saturday morning that Mr. Wine deliberately had his supporters behave in ways aimed at provoking police to act violently so that they get publicity and sympathy and he is fearful the way the Police acted thus far inadvertently favored People Power. "He is getting the publicity and public sympathy and way police have reacted so tar has only made my work difficult as a supporter of NRM and spokesperson of government," Opondo said before disclosing what Gen Sabiiti told him on phone.

That he told him PP deserved to be repulsed by Police because they weren't complying with consultation guidelines as given by the EC. That they were proceeding to have meetings in open spaces as opposed to town hall meetings similar to Gen Mugisha Muntu's and that they were having processions which are disallowed in EC guidelines. That they were provoking police and had a plan to abandon their cars in the middle of the road and run away in order to paralyze traffic and maximize publicity for their riotous behavior.

Opondo said some of the demands police was making on Bobi Wine were unreasonable and avoidable. He for instance questioned what would happen if Bobi Wine was allowed to have his meeting in an open play ground as opposed to a hall. "What if he has over 2,000 people coming for his consultative meeting? Can those fit in a classroom which is a closed hall? The answer is no and I insist police should have acted more reasonably notwithstanding the fact that the Kyagulanyi group are always out to provoke police into mistakes to get publicity and sympathy," Opondo said during a talk show that had Asuman Basalirwa, Lydia Wanyoto and Nanfuuka debating with him.

He claimed there are incidences of extreme provocation that he watched on video including PP supporters getting sticks to whip policemen on top of kicking them during the confrontation. Defending the state approach, Opondo wondered why Gen Muntu who has been consulting for such a long time regarding his ANT hasn't been treated the same way. He said this is because the Muntu crowd (thin as it might be) is always disciplined and restrained unlike the PP crowds who he accused of mimicking Besigye's defiance approach. He maintained that inadvertent as they might have been, police actions have so far enabled Mr. Wine to gain the public sympathy and free publicity that he is always craving for.

Saying being veterans in the opposition politics, having worked closely with Besigye, Mbabazi and others they aren't surprised with the police handling of the Bobi Wine crowd, Asuman Basalirwa said time has come for the PPM to abandon the cry baby syndrome and devise other means of circumventing the police obstacle including operating underground. "I knew this from day one and I shared as much with my brother Bobi Wine the day he told me he wants to run for President. I told him I know how they treated Dr. Besigye and Honorable Mbabazi. Its going to be the same or even worse and that is why he isn't surprised. He is actually emotionally prepared for even much worse," said Basalirwa whose Bugiri defeat in 2021 Opondo repeatedly prophesied like he did for former LoP Wafula Oguttu in the runner up to 2016 on the same Gang show.
