POSTHUMOUS BATON GIFT TO GIDEON MOI WAS LIKE COLD PORRIDGE
BY MOHAMED WARSAMA
Contrary to media sensational headlines that Raymond Moi's handover of Mzee Moi's famous ivory baton to Gideon Moi and proclamation of becoming the political head of the family sets the stage for a Moi vs Ruto power struggle in the Rift Valley, there is nothing on the ground to warrant that view.
Gideon Moi has been the de facto political head of the Moi family and chairman of Kanu since he harassed Uhuru Kenyatta into giving up the post in April 2012.
From that time onward, Kanu has been rather inactive with a few limited forays into selected areas where it managed to pick up a seat here and there. Whereas Kanu was lavish in its spending during Mzee Moi's time, and under Uhuru Kenyatta too, Gideon Moi was noticeably tight-fisted when it came to promoting the party.
At one stage, the party was asked to move out of its Lavington headquarters for non-payment of rent.
Many of its 30 branch buildings, notably the one Shariff Nasser was so proud of in Mvita, Mombasa are in a state of neglect.
The baton hand-over last Wednesday was rather late in the day. It was like serving cold stale porridge. It adds no practical value to Gideon Moi's political status in the Rift Valley.
For it to have made more than a symbolic significance, that baton should have been officially handed over by Mzee Moi when Gideon replaced Uhuru in April 2012.
Mzee Moi should have called a gathering of Kalenjin elders in Kabarak in 2012 and officially anointed Gideon as his political successor.
He did nothing of the kind. Instead he let Gideon find his own level in politics without his assistance.
Gideon has his work cut out for him.
Eighteen years have passed since his father and his rungu left the centre of national politics.
In those 18 years, an entirely new generation of young voters especially in the Rift Valley has been spawned to whom the rungu means nothing.
Then, there are the older generations who lived under his father's despotic rule graphically captured in the X-rated files published by the Friday Nation yesterday.
The majority of the victims of Moi's crackdown and torture chambers in the Nyayo House basement were predominantly Kikuyus followed by Luos.
Gideon is counting on getting the Kikuyus to back him against DP Ruto, his main challenger in the Rift Valley.
But would these Kikuyus wish to be reminded of what they went through under Mzee Moi by backing his son ?
Lastly, who would want Kanu to be popular and powerful again ?
Certainly not ODM leader Raila Odinga who was captured on video resisting Kanu secretary-general Nick Salat's call at the burial for people to wave the Kanu Juu finger.
While Kalonzo Musyoka and Musalia Mudavadi happily waved their index fingers as Salat shouted repeatedly Kanu Juu, Raila did not smile and simply raised his index finger reluctantly as far as his right ear lobe.
Raila was clearly uncomfortable with the Kanu Juu call by Salat. He wants Kalenjins to troop back to ODM not Kanu.
These are the tough political hurdles facing Gideon Moi, foremost the torture legacy left by his father.
There is only way he can overcome that dark legacy.
By denouncing the torture record of his father and saying he is not to be blamed for it.
But would he dare do it ?
Unlikely given the fear by African politicians of incurring the wrath of departed spirits.
