PDP President Dr. Abed Bwanika, claiming to have heavily invested personal cash in the party in the last two years, has this Saturday morning described DP President Norbert Mao as the most treacherous politician he has come to know. Appearing on CBS radio along with Betty Nambooze, Bwanika enumerated ways in which he says Mao betrayed them as co-Principals in DP Bloc by not honoring some of the promises he made in writing including the pledge to expeditiously fill the vacant NEC positions in DP. Bwanika said he considers himself high profile and expected Mao to quickly arrange for the filling of the vacant positions of DP National Chairman, SG and Treasurer one of which had to go to him, Mike Mabikke and Lubega Mukaku. National Chairman Mohammed Kezaala defected to NRM leaving a vacancy; SG Matia Nsubuga died as did Treasurer General Issa Kikungwe.
Bwanika added that in the last two years of closely working under DP Bloc he had realized Mao has two phobias-one related to allowing being overshadowed by politicians from Buganda within DP and the other related to Bobi Wine Kyagulanyi Sentamu of People Power. That he also realized Mao was never comfortable with DP Bloc leaders using the reunion activities, while allying with People Power, to weaken Museveni who he claimed he is clearly the man some leaders in DP currently work for. That in the last two years they have related under DP Bloc, Bwanika also painfully discovered that Mao never keeps his word. "He is one who you agree with something in the night and he does totally the opposite in the morning and it seems he doesn't respect people he covenants with," Bwanika said adding he had tolerated lots of inconsistencies and draconian practices by Mao.
That one time they had a meeting at Mao's home where he (Bwanika) boldly suggested that the DP President produces a program that would be followed by DP Bloc Principals to help popularize DP in Mao's Acholi sub region. "He never took that proposal seriously yet we were saying we want to plant and reawaken a strong DP in Acholi. I was shocked here was a President General who isn't in a hurry to recruit and grow the strength of his party." Bwanika says he was also shocked at the extent to which DP members and leaders like Betty Nambooze can be willing to tolerate the unconstitutional practices of Mao, VP Mbidde and SG Gerald Siranda. "In Masaka we have a one Kasirye who was organizing Secretary for the district and was just dismissed. I couldn't believe that someone who ascended office through election can easily be ousted from office by mere individuals. As I reflected on that, they did the same to Kidandala and I think this is all deliberate to weaken DP especially in Buganda here." Bwanika also claimed that apart from Buganda, the rest of DP regions have no delegates but ghosts which are ones Mao, Mbidde and Siranda use to determine the elective outcomes at the Delegates Conference.
He claimed even before elections are properly organized, the trio already has a register of delegates implying they are all fake prepared to defeat the wishes of DP Buganda which is determined to produce real delegates to the Delegates Conference. He said in his Bukoto South in Lwengo district they had gone into defiance aimed at defying Mao's sham elections by electing proper structures as recognized by Sulaiman Kidandala who he maintained remains the legitimate OS for DP. Bwanika, who didn't explain how he can legally be member and leader in two rival political parties namely DP and his obscure PDP at the same time, urged other parts of Buganda to emulate their defiance as DP leaders in Lwengo and say "a big no to Mao's sham elections leading into the DC."
VOWS TO OUST MAO
Bwanika also defended those who mid-week held a news conference at Speke Hotel to bash Mao saying that nobody should silence them simply because by some coincidence all of them were Baganda. "We are not going to apologize to anybody for being Baganda and for being proud of the fact that we now have the best Presidential candidate in Honorable Kyagulanyi. It's a fact DP is strongest in Buganda and the best Mao can do is to emulate how we are able to do it in Buganda as DP leaders so that he is able to excel his politics in Acholi. That blackmail of his of saying I'm being criticized because I'm an Acholi, isn't going to be tolerated and nobody is going to be apologetic being a Muganda," ranted Bwanika when pushed into discussing tribal matters which many consider to be his most convenient subject to discuss. "We the Baganda who he says discriminate him are the ones who enabled his Luo co-ethnic Milton Obote to lead Uganda at Independence and this was after shunning our own Ben Kiwanuka."
Bwanika also bragged being a rich man since campus days at Makerere where he says he conspicuously funded Mao's guild campaigns against Noble Mayombo using money from his vet products shop at Container Village. "I have always not been poor because even at Makerere, I had my business in town from where I got money to fund Mao's campaigns because I have always had love for DP. I backed him and influenced his victory because he was DP, a party I grew up knowing as a young man in Masaka. And by the way he didn't defeat Mayombo because he was more eloquent or brilliant than him. Mayombo was by far better and [Mao's victory] was because of people like myself who commanded others to rally behind him," Bwanika said claiming he had a loud speaker which he dedicated to promote the Mao candidature while demonizing Mayombo. He claimed the Mao he sees in DP today is too lukewarm (and different from the one he funded in Makerere in 1990) when it comes to fighting hard to get Museveni out of power. That the one of today doesn't seem to be in a hurry to see Museveni off.
Aded Bwanika, who exhibited interest in grabbing a top NEC position at the forthcoming DP DC, also put Mao on notice about what could happen in case he continues with his acts that violate the DP Constitution. "I know you are somewhere listening to me. I'm called Dr. Abed Bwanika and I'm not Nambooze. You are used to the Namboozes who would give up and walk away but the Abed Bwanika you are listening to is a fighter who, as you know, doesn't fear anybody. I will fight until you are out of DP and we are going to overcome you no matter what."
Bwanika said the only option he was considering (as capable of ousting Mao without humiliating him) was appealing to elders like PK Semogerere and others in DP "but from what Honorable Nambooze, who has been in DP longer, has said, that route of trying elders won't lead us far because if you can defy the Cardinal and go to Mbale after committing yourself in writing, then such methods can't with you." Nambooze had recalled the meeting the Cardinal convened at his Nsambya home urging warring parties in 2010 not to go to Mbale for the DC that eventually ushered in Mao. Nambooze said Mao, Mzee Sebaana Kizito and others casually ignored their undertaking before the Cardinal and went to Mbale, a thing she said only escalated problems in DP.
Claiming to have failed to get Mao and Siranda for a comment, Med Nsereko the moderator towards the end of the program got Fred Mwesigwa (Mao's PA on media affairs) to say something defensive of his boss who Bwanika demonized like there was no tomorrow. Mwesigwa advised aggrieved individuals like Bwanika to drag Mao to court in case they consider any of his decisions anomalous and contrary to party Constitutional dictates. He also cautioned against washing dirty linen on the party in public. (For comments on this story, call, text or whatsapp us on 0705579994 or email us at mulengera2040@gmail.com).
